A denture or a complete denture is often called an appliance inserted in the mouth, replaces natural teeth, and supports the cheeks and lips.
Most dentures are made of acrylic and can be fabricated in two different ways.
- A conventional denture is made after all teeth have been extracted and the tissues (gums) have healed.
- An immediate denture is fabricated and inserted immediately after the teeth are extracted, and the tissues are allowed to heal under the denture.
- An upper denture has acrylic, usually flesh-colored, covering the palate (roof of the mouth).
- A lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe to leave room for the tongue.
Dentures over a normal course of time will wear and need to be replaced or relined to keep the jaw alignment normal. The alignment will slowly change as the bone and gum ridges recede or shrink due to the extraction of the teeth. Regular dental examinations are still important for the denture wearer so that the oral tissues can be checked for disease or change.
Implant-Supported vs. Traditional Dentures
Traditional dentures are held in place over the gums with natural suction and special adhesives. This makes the restorations prone to slipping when the patient eats or talks, causing discomfort and embarrassment. Denture movement can also contribute to oral health concerns like an inconsistent bite pattern, worn soft tissue, or TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder.
Implant-supported dentures are sturdy and reliable, so you will never have to worry your restoration will slip out of place. Implant-supported dentures rely on a more predictable method of retaining artificial teeth. Dental implants (titanium posts) are surgically inserted into the jaw and fuse with the bone. Dentures are then attached to the implants, which offer a strong and stable foundation. Additionally, implants act like dental roots to preserve a healthy, dense jawbone.
Implant-supported dentures offer a stable, natural-looking replacement for several missing teeth or an entire dental arch. Anchored into the jaw with titanium posts, implant-retained dentures provide unmatched durability and stability. Additionally, Dental Implant Studio used a laboratory to hold patients’ custom dentures to the highest functional and aesthetic standards.
